At HHNC we believe that a connection to nature is the right of every child and a crucial part of their healthy development. Childhood should be a season of wonder, exploration, and connection to the natural world and we honor it as a time to play, learn, and grow.
The Seven Pillars of HHNC’s education philosophy serve as the foundation for everything we do. They guide how we support each child’s growth, share experiences in our learning environments, build community, and partner with families. These pillars reflect our commitment to nurturing the whole child–while fostering environmental stewardship, resilience, and joy.
Nature
We believe nature is both our classroom and our teacher. Ongoing connections to the natural world foster empathy, environmental responsibility, and lifelong stewardship. By cultivating respect for living things and caring for the land, children develop not only knowledge of nature, but a meaningful relationship with it. We nurture the whole child—curious minds, capable bodies, and compassionate hearts—while inspiring a lasting love for the natural world.
Play
We believe play is learning and the important work of early childhood. Through open-ended, hands-on play, children explore ideas, solve problems, and build physical skills—while developing a sense of wonder and experiencing learning as joyful, meaningful, and engaging.
Education
We believe learning spaces should balance child-led exploration with teacher-led instruction. Our nature-based curriculum, which incorporates a flexible, child-centered approach, grows from the children's interests, questions, and curiosities. Trusted educators set clear, respectful boundaries and appropriate expectations that help learners flourish indoors and outdoors.
Social-Emotional Learning
We believe every child is unique and capable. Age-appropriate, inclusive, and adaptable experiences foster self-confidence and empathy through self-awareness, collaboration, and conflict resolution. Children build sensory awareness and emotional security outdoors, while being invited into deeper inquiry as they grow.
Resilience
We believe children grow by taking thoughtful risks. We see challenges not as obstacles, but as opportunities to grow. With supportive guidance, children try hard things, learn from mistakes, build resilience, and develop confidence and independence within a safe and caring environment.
Creativity & Curiosity
We believe exploration and child-led discovery are essential to learning. When children are given space, time, encouragement, and freedom—and when teachers model creativity and curiosity alongside them—they imagine, experiment, and express themselves, developing flexibility, confidence, and the ability to think outside the box.
Community & Connection
We believe strong connections, fostered by our teachers, help children thrive. By working and playing together—and caring for one another and our environment—children feel safe and ready to explore, learn, and grow. They discover teamwork, responsibility, and what it means to belong to a kind and supportive community.
