Native Americans: Meeting Your Basic Needs
The original inhabitants of this area, the Lenape, were skillful at meeting basic needs using the resources of nature. Learn what Henry Hudson would have discovered upon meeting these Native Americans 400 years ago. Through the use of actual artifacts and replicas, students will explore how these resourceful people obtained food, clothing and shelter. Topics covered include…
Hunting and gathering for food
Basic structure of shelters such as the long house and wic-a-wam
Construction of tools from stone, bone and wood
Clothing made from skins and pelts
Our program concludes with a traditional Native American tale of the Hunted Songbirds which teaches the lesson of harvesting from nature only what one requires to meet basic needs of survival.
